How to activate an app without a code

The code method is optional. If an app will not show a code, or you just want a faster route, there are two solid alternatives.

1. Sign in directly on the device

Nearly every app lets you choose "Sign in on this device" and type your email and password with the remote. It is slower, but it always works and needs no second device. Use the on-screen keyboard carefully, and turn on "show password" if the app offers it to avoid typos.

2. Scan a QR code

Many apps now show a QR code next to (or instead of) the text code. Point your phone camera at it, tap the link that appears, sign in, and you are done — no typing at all. See QR code activation for the full walkthrough.

When you are stuck between options

  • No code and no QR? Use the email-and-password option on the device.
  • Code keeps failing? Switch to signing in directly, or try the QR code.
  • On a friend's device? Sign in, watch, then remember to sign out from your account's "manage devices" page afterwards.

Frequently asked questions

Do all apps support code-free sign-in?

Almost all let you type your email and password directly on the device. The code and QR options are conveniences, not requirements.

How do I sign out of a device I activated?

Use the "manage devices" or "sign out everywhere" option in your account settings on the service's website.
